This gallery focuses on Carly’s favorite subject: flukes. To propel themselves into a dive, Humpback whales arch their back and lift their tail to overcome their own buoyancy. This motion creates a cascading waterfall as the whale descends from the surface. The tail, or fluke, that breaks the surface is more than just a spectacle, as each fluke has a unique underside pattern that allows conservationists to track individuals. If you look closely, you can see barnacles growing on the outer edges of some tails.
